Tenth Anniversary Event - Chagall Exhibition

Utsunomiya Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Marc Chagall
Chagall's appeal is in the way in which he brings joy to the awkward everyday. For example, embracing newly-weds floating from the sky, strange creatures playing the clarinet or violin, the sun and moon melting into one another as they smile. Chagall is probably the first painter to produce such light, beautiful imagery.

However, what do these paintings really mean? Chagall has once spoken the words "If I have a hiding place in my paintings, I will slip my autobiography there", but the fragments of his life hidden in his paintings are not something that can be easily understood by merely looking at them.

This exhibition aims to deepen the understanding of Chagall by focusing on love, a significant theme that he has expressed in his paintings.
