"Silk Stories - Creating Japanese Culture" Exhibition

Bunka Gakuen Costume Museum
Finished
Silk has a lustrous, supple texture that cannot be seen in other clothing materials. The Japanese, especially the upper class Japanese, have had a historic deep connection with silk as is evidenced in the Shousoin relics. In the Edo era, silk began to be used by the masses as well and in recent years it has supported the Japanese economy as a representative export item. Different silk items were created for use in different situations, and the oft-heard chirimen, habutae, rinzu, kinran, donsu are only a few of the names of the numerous types of silk textiles that exist in Japanese.

In this exhibition, various traditional silk textiles will be on display from kimonos to court costumes and Noh theater costumes. Also, the newest silks and research on silkworms will be introduced by the Textile Department of Shinshu University.
