"Alternative Is Over: If You Want It!" Meeting Symposium

Yokohama Museum of Art
Finished
“Art Network Asia: For Constructing the Human Relationship in the World” supported by The Toyota Foundation, started last November and continues until October 2008 as a project that works to develop and deepen relations between contemporary art professionals working in China, Thailand, Australia and Korea. As a part of this project, the museum will organize the periodic meeting of international curators. This symposium is intended as the first meeting of this project, which was realized when some Australian curators made a research trip to Japan.

For this symposium, three young curators from Australia - Sally Breen, Bec Dean and Reuben Keehan - are invited to discuss various issues and the meaning of alternative spaces in both Australia and Japan, as based on their experience. Nowadays, many art institutions, be they museums or public galleries, have started projects such as artist-in-residence programs, and they tend to play similar roles to alternative art spaces. Based on the current situation of artistic activity in Asia and the Pan Pacific area, the symposium will become an opportunity to discuss and indicate the differences in the significance of alternative spaces and institutions.

The round table talk is open to twenty members of the public and will be held in Japanese and English with consecutive translation.
