"Biombo: Japan Heritage as Legend of Gold" Exhibition

Suntory Museum of Art
Finished
Biombo is pronounced "bi-on-bo" and means "byoubu (folding screen)" in Portuguese and Spanish. Japanese folding screens were sent abroad at the beginning of the modern era as an export item of the Nanban trade, and the term also made its way over to other countries at this time. In this special exhibition commemorating the opening of the museum one year ago, the history of folding screens will be followed from various angles such as "formation and unfolding of byoubu's", "byoubu rituals", "Biombo era: Nanban exchange through byoubu", "profusion of modern byoubu", "byoubu sent as gifts to foreign countries" and "pictures on sliding doors and folding screens across the ocean". The beauty and function of folding screens and the role that they played in cultural exchange will be explored. In this exhibition, 10 folding screens that were originally sent as gifts to Holland by the Edo Shogunate will return to Japan for the first time and other works that are collection items in foreign museums will also be on display.
