Leo van der Kleij "Photography from My Sketchbooks 1973-2007"

In the past, photographers used Polaroids to check if the light was good or the composition was strong. Nowadays most photographers put one eye on the subject, and the other eye on the screen of their digital camera. After taking photos you start up your computer and pick out what you need. Eventually the art-director sits behind you suggesting how and what to take.
This new way of working might have some advantages, but Dutch photographer Leo van der Kleij still loves the old ways of taking mainly black and white photographs with a small Minox 35 mm camera or the Rolleiflex 6 x 6 which is just as old as he is. Always carrying these cameras with him, he often takes pictures with the thought, "I have to come back here another time when the light is better, my mood is better, when I have more time, when I am on my own, when I’m not hungry, etc." Van der Kleij made many of these "side-photos" for private purpose only, for fun or just because he is so used to seeing everything via the lens of a camera.
The aim of this exhibition is to show many works from the artist’s archives that he has made since 1973. All archived photos are black and white and taken with a 35 mm or 6 x 6 camera. The photos will be shown in various sizes (A4, A3 and 50 x 50 cm) as original monochrome handmade prints. He proposes to hang them thematically in categories such as music, family life, abstractions, art world, and so on. Some more familiar works will be combined with rather weird images in this diverse exhibition. Most photos were taken in the Netherlands, Germany, Italy and France and some others in Great Britain, Japan, Hungary, Tjecho-Slovakya, Austria and Spain. There will be real "art photos" next to his rough materials and private works, all of which is being publicized for the first time as ... a sketchbook!
