"Themed Exhibition from the Museum Collection X: Photographs and Artist Books"

Urawa Art Museum
Finished
"Artist books" are difficult to define due to the various interpretations. One narrow definition is to think of them as books that artists created after the 1960s, not as collections of works, but as a new kind of expressive media in the form of a brochure. Many were created cheaply and simply with offset printing and contrast greatly with modern artists' lavish original print illustration books, but there is great variety in content spanning from graphics to poems and typography to photographs.

Gilbert and George, Christian Boltanski, Hans-Peter Feldman and pioneer Edward Ruscha's art books all used photographic works. These art books using photographs as material differ from photograph collections in several ways. The quality of the photographs is not necessarily great, since existing photos or those taken by others were often utilized. This exhibition features 43 such artist books to introduce these little known works.
