Thirteen students from the Royal College of Art descend upon Tokyo to present experimental design with a social conscience. Remote-controlled roller skates, arrogant bodybuilders, subversive sandcastles and the world's fastest clock are just some of the inventive projects featured in a four-day showcase of experimental product design by thirteen students from London's Royal College of Art.
The exhibition will feature objects, installations, videos and performances by some of the UK's most innovative young designers. The projects make powerful statements about consumerism, activism and the myths of technological progress. Featured projects include Dash Macdonald’s remote-controlled roller skating performance, Lucia Massari's video about beauty as seen through the eyes of a professional bodybuilder, Marc Owens' experiments in avatar identity and Tony Mullin's subversive sandcastles.
The exhibitors are all students on the acclaimed Platform 11 studio in the Design Products department at the Royal College of Art. Run by Noam Toran, Onkar Kular and Carey Young, Platform 11 uses design as a medium to address contemporary and speculative issues related to technology, psychology and socio-political trends.
