"New Acquisitions: Works by Fumio Asakura" Exhibition

Hakone Open Air Museum
Finished

Artists

Fumio Asakura, Takeshi Hayashi, Yoshi Kinouchi et al.
This exhibition presents works from the museum collection, centering on newly acquired cat sculptures by Fumio Asakura, along with works by Takeshi Hayashi and Yoshi Kinouchi, as well as newly purchased work by Sweden-based Yoshio Nakajima.
Asakura was born in Oita Prefecture in 1883, graduated from the sculpture department of Tokyo University of the Arts, and received the grand prize at the Bun-ten exhibition the following year. His craftsmanship and keen observational eye helped perfect his style, which was influenced by realism. He was also a passionate educator who contributed to the further development of Japanese sculpture. Asakura is well known for his figurative sculpture, and yet he also created a number of animal sculptures, cats in particular, which he loved very much.
As opposed to Asakura's realism, non-representational works by Yoshio Nakajima and Kyoji Nagatani, who now resides in Italy, carry a sense of freedom. The artists represented at this show will hopefully give viewers a sense of the breadth of different styles practiced in modern Japanese art.
