The Shinjin Gakai was formed in 1943 by eight friends: Aimitsu, Saburo Aso, Wasaburo Itozono, Chozaburo Inoue, Goro Ono, Masao Tsuruoka, Masaaki Terada and Shunsuke Matsumoto.

Although limits to discourse and expression were fairly rigid during this time, Shinjin Gakai painted what they painted, and even opened an exhibition in Ginza while air raid warnings sounded all around them. Due to the chaos of the war and deaths of some members, they only held three exhibitions, but their work and activities continue to be debated and spoken about today.

This exhibition features not only works from Shinjin Gakai's exhibitions, but also valuable pre- and postwar works by each of its eight members that have left an indelible mark on Japanese art history. Also on display are recreations of the galleries that they exhibited in, as well as archival materials and photographs.

Talk events (Japanese only) also scheduled. See website for details.
