Toyo Ito, Takram Design Engineering
Aiming to support collaborative projects between architects and creators from other fields, the 6th edition of Okamura Design Space R has invited the world renowned architect Toyo Ito and the young creative team Takram Design Engineering, who uniquely combines design and engineering.
This installation consists of 280 wind chimes suspended from the ceiling. These seemingly regular glass wind chimes are actually sensors which monitor people's movement in the space and create soothing sound and activate LED lights, like fireflies synchronized with the sound.
The waves of sound and lights weaving right above people's heads make it seem as if the wind chimes are following people walking through the space, and the different hieghts of the suspended windchimes are reminiscent of fireflies flying about.
This collaboration of design and engineering creates a fantastical composition of sound and light. As an introduction to this project, Ito asserts, "in this complex state of urban life, people only interact within a limited social community of their own, and yet the whole system is maintained in this manner. Such multiplicity is what complies the whole."
