Keiko Sasaoka
Eschewing both the precision of German photography and the brightly lit contemporary snapshot style that aims toward a high level of technical beauty, Sasaoka seems to have nailed a specifically Japanese expressive tendency. In her "Park City", featuring the Peace Park in Hiroshima, or various landscape shots of beaches and snowcapped mountains, as well as series of "limit" and "sightseeing" works featuring the people who live in these places, Sasaoka reflects a consistent concept that recalls certain contradictory states of calm and clear-sightedness in Buddhist thought, while simulateneously posing certain ontological questions. This notion is remarkably reflected in her recent work, "Fishing," whose surface shimmers with a sense of sublimity.
This exhibition features 30 works created between 2001 and 2007 that confront viewers with an uneasy halfway state lingering between absence and presence.
