"Art of Our Time" Exhibition

Ueno Royal Museum
Finished
The Praemium Imperiale Award is targeted at artists across the world and was founded following the will of Prince Takamatsunomiya, who served as president of the Japan Art Association, during which tenure he made determined efforts to contribute to the dissemination and advancement of world culture and art. Since 1989, this annual award has been given out to one artist for outstanding achievements in each of the following categories: painting, sculpture, architecture, music and performance/video.

This year marks the 20th anniversary since the inauguration of the award. To celebrate this commemorative year, this exhibition showcases paintings and sculptures by 41 winners of the award, each of whom has left a major impact on the history of contemporary art as representative artists of various art movements such as Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, Minimalism, Neo-expressionism, Conceptualism, and other modes of expression too unique to be categorized. This exhibition gives viewers the opportunity to take in a comprehensive view of the art of 'our time'.
