Artists

Tomoko Nagai
In most cases, Nagai starts by developing the background of her painting. Her stories take place in different places and situations such as a forest, a snowy landscape, beach, someone's room and so on. She takes her motifs from these newly created worlds, evoking feelings that are hard to verbalize. In a certain sense, her paintings are accumulations of "anything" that has caught her attention. For example, Nagai always finds a space in her painting for a pillow using a motif found on her own teacup. The pillow plays a significant role contextually as well as visually. Also, she uses various media in her painting such as acrylic, watercolor, colored pencil, regular pencil, and pastel. This is again for the purpose of depicting the exact motif or feeling found in any given landscape.
