"PopulouSCAPE - Night Flight Over an Urbanizing World" visualizes 8400 cities around the world as a video piece accompanied by beautiful music. This piece was exhibited at the Aichi Exposition in 2005, and also traveled to London, Paris, Linz, and Yokohama.
Inspired by "Terre des Hommes (Wind, Sand and Stars)" by writer Saint-Exupéry, the 10 minute video takes you to a night flight over Asia, Europe, Africa, and America, all of which are visualized as once city. A small city with 100,000 population is represented as a one-storey building, a large city with 1,000,000 population as a ten-storey building, and a metropolis with 10,000,000 population as a hundred-storey skyscraper. The world population distribution is thus mapped out in a form of nightscape with the forest of buildings. The music was created just for this video, reflecting on the increasing population, developing physical and digital accessibility between cities. Statistics tell us the world population is increasing 170,000 per day. This work quietly speaks of the overwhelming fact of the urbanization.
