The National Film Center presents selected masterpieces by the French film director Jean Renoir. This series of screenings coincides with the "Renoir + Renoir" exhibition held at Bunkamura the Museum (February 2nd - May 6th). It is also the final installment in the series of screenings as part of the Jean Renoir retrospective, "The World of Jean Renoir Films," which took place at two other theaters in Tokyo.
Jean Renoir was born a year before the motion picture was invented, the second son of Impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir. In the early stages of film history, he contributed to the establishment of film as a major art form of the 20th century. This event showcases a total of 15 works, including the first film he directed, "La fille de l'eau" (Whirlpool of Fate, 1925), the silent comedy film, "Tire au flanc" (The Sad Sack), and his first color film, "The River," shot in India.
