"Suiboku-ga" was a style of ink painting that originated in mainland China and later imported into Japan and developed as an independent art form. The Japanese suiboku-ga master Sesshu came from Okayama, and the Okayama Prefecture Museum of Art has built up a collection of famous suiboku-ga works, and held many exhibitions of this genre of painting. The museum's collection includes many valuable works from the Song period in China as well as medieval Japanese pieces.
This exhibition has been made possible through the generous support of the Okayama Prefecture Museum of Art, which has kindly permitted the exhibition here of 66 famous works spanning a period of over 600 years. Included are works by Muqi and Yuhun from the Song period, Sesshu from the Muromachi period, Musashi Miyamoto and Gyokudo Urakami from the Edo period, and Tomioka Tessai from the Meiji period.
