"In Memory of Kaii Higashiyama: Nikkei Nihonga Grand Prize" Exhibition

New Otani Art Museum
Finished
The Nikkei Nihonga Grand Prize in memory of Kaii Higashiyama was founded in 2002 by the Nihon Keizai Shinbun newspaper as a system to recognize and reward promising up-and-coming nihonga painters who will take the artform into the 21st century. Named for the renowned nihonga master Kaii Higashiyama who passed away in 1999, the award hopes to transmit the achievements of those who have inherited the best traditions of nihonga to posterity, as well as to objectively assess the work of nihonga painters who strive to hone their craft daily, in hopes of unearthing leading artistic talent for the next generation.

This 4th installment of the exhibition features 14 works selected from a large pool of recommendations, including those that were awarded major prizes.
