"CAA-Contemporary Art Auction-Sale.5"

Bunkamura Museum of Art
Finished
5th edition of Japan's first augur auction dealing in contemporary art!

Focusing mainly on contemporary art from Japan and abroad, Augur Auction aims at the rejuvenation of Japan's contemporary art scene. Since its founding in 2006 by art dealers, its high quality works have attracted the attention of serious collectors.

Delving particularly into postwar Japanese art, taking up for instance numerous works by Gutai, formed in 1954 by Jiro Yoshihara, Toshio Yoshida and Shozo Shimamoto, the augur auction has realized a particularly unique selection. At the Sale.4 last time, a work by Gutai member Kazuo Hakuhatsu sold for a bid of 20 million yen ($200,000). Although Japanese artists have recently begun to acquire international recognition as part of a growing Japanese art scene, the truth of the situation is that there are many postwar contemporary Japanese artists who are little known and poorly appraised. Augur Auction aims to focus on precisely these artists, according these pioneers of postwar Japanese art proper appraisals and evaluations, and aiming at the creation of a market that will hereafter grow and foster the next generation of young artists. The auction has a high degree of international visibility, and the number of participants from abroad now exceeds more than 50%.

This is a bidding system auction, which is as yet fairly unfamiliar in Japan, but preview sessions for advance viewing of the works will be held from August 28th-31st.
