"Regions Looking at Each Other: Mukojima, Tokyo = Mitsuhama, Matsuyama"

Contemporary Art Factory
Finished
The Matsuyama-based nonprofit arts organization Kakoa, which organizes art events using the town and its remaining old buildings as a starting point, first made contact with Contemporary Art Factory in Mukojima, Tokyo in 2004. Since then, the two institutions have maintained loose contact. This year, however, they are carrying out a project that will connect the two cities of Matsuyama and Tokyo. This year, the old Art Nouveau-style Mitsu railway station run by Iyo Railway, which operated for over 70 years, was torn down because of its deteriorating condition; while redevelopment plans in Mukojima in the wake of the looming construction of the Tokyo Sky Tree are also underway - old memories in both cities continue to be lost. This event hopes to uncover possibilities for vital art projects using their host cities as a stage, investigating how art can connect with the surrounding area and bring about change.
