Shinya Tanoue
Shinya Tanoue makes ceramic globular objects with two layers that look like eggshells, each measuring around 30 to 40 centimeters across. They are made from red earth with a whitening product applied. A thin wire is used to scrape off a radial portion from one side of the ceramic object leading from the base up to its top edge. This detailed yet stiff flourish creates the impression of the instant at which a piece of lustrous white porcelain is broken into countless small shards.

These two globular forms seem to by turns appear and then disappear between its edges, and its rich green surface creates a vivid visual impression, a brilliant surge of color on a monotone background. Tanoue's newer works focuses even more on this green element using a Mobius strip-like component that is continuous from exterior to interior, demonstrating the depth and expansiveness of both shape and color alike. Prior to studying ceramics at an art college, Tanoue held a regular office job. For him, ceramics are first and foremost "vessels."

Tanoue has previously shown his work mostly at open call exhibitions, but this exhibition at INAX is his first solo show. Around 10 pieces including new works will be on display.
