Yasuyuki Nishio
This is Yasuyuki's third solo exhibition at Yamamoto Gendai, following "Transform" and "Yurei", entitled "Drown."

Nishio almost drowned in the sea when he was a child. Ever since, he has been haunted by the constant threat of death posed by water - a substance that is ironically in fact indispensable to life. After a prolonged search for emotional relief from this conundrum, he came to the conclusion that becoming a fish would provide the ideal solution. If one could become able to breathe underwater, the link between water and death would be undone, and Nishio would be able to shake off his fear. The works at this exhibition represent an attempt to render in three dimensions the process by which humans could transform into aquatic creatures, and in particular "mermaids." However, these works lack the mythical proportions of the folktale creatures - instead, they propose a sort of evolutionary realism in relation to a human race that is as yet completely unsuited to living underwater.

For this exhibition, the space of Yamamoto Gendai will be transformed into an ocean-like environment with three meter long mermaids floating within. In addition, new 2D works and the "Drawn - The Sands" mermaid piece exhibited at this year's "Kita" exhibition in Indonesia will be on display.
