Masamichi Yamamoto
This exhibition commemorates the retirement of Professor Masamichi Yamamoto, who pioneered new, unique directions in contemporary sculpture.

After completing the graduate course in sculpture at the Tokyo University of the Arts in 1967, he studied in Rome under a scholarship from the Italian government, becoming an apprentice to Pericle Fazzini. In 1978, he went to America as a researcher on the Fulbright exchange program, visiting aboriginal ruins and cultivating places where he could work and create sculpture. He then returned to Japan and became an instructor in sculpture at the Tokyo University of the Arts in 1980, nurturing the next generation of young artists while also continuing to explore the tranquil world of sculpture.

This exhibition commemorates his retirement in March this year, showcasing the richness of his oeuvre as well as his artistic trajectory, which consistently pursued the essence of his chosen medium. Around 36 representative sculptures and sketches ranging from his early works to recent pieces are on display.
