Martin Mannig
Nanzuka Underground is holding a solo exhibition of new works by Martin Mannig, a young painter from Germany.

Mannig was born in Freiburg in 1974 and obtained a Master's from Dresden Art University.
His works draw on a variety of sources, from traditional German satirical stories to contemporary subcultures, resulting in vital, relevant paintings that convey the freedom of the medium as a form of expression, as well as its undiminished appeal in this day and age. Although his works appear to be infused with wit and humor at first glance, lurking in the background are subtle reflections on the indignity and ugliness of human history that come from Mannig's keen awareness of the meaning of existence.

This exhibition, Mannig's first solo show in Japan as well as Asia, features his paintings, drawings and installations. The works are based on Mannig's familiarity with traditional German fairytales, and also draws inspiration from the sort of horror B-movies ("midnight pictures") that screen on late-night TV, or at all-night cinemas.
