The nomadic tribes of Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan, who lived in Western Asia beyond the western end of the Silk Road, used woolen salt bags with their unique tribal patterns woven into them. Salt was essential to the nomads' lives, and played a role in controlling their herds of livestock, as well as in cooking. Many salt bags that were used to store this precious material have been acquired by this museum's collection. In addition to these, precious antique bags and textiles from the Maruyama Collection will be open to the public for the first time in this exhibition. Each of the carpets, kilim, tablecloths and saddle bags is carefully crafted using traditional techniques, finished in rich colors obtained from plant dyes.
