Nishimura has been making images using photograms, or by blowing up negatives of snowscape footage. His Vicissitudes series, shown at this gallery in 2006, consisted of blown-up images of dust and dirt that stuck to the paper that peeled off the band of sticky tape used to clean carpets, resembling the space of an alternate universe.
This exhibition features pictures of the surface of snow obtained by blowing up negatives of these scenes. Attempting to capture snow on film is a difficult task. The dazzling flakes are often reduced to an undifferentiated white surface with no texture; or else a dirty grey wash. The delicate expressions of snow cannot be fixed on printing paper. Nishimura, however, does not try to reproduce these varying tones in snow; rather, his works are evidence of observation of the small twigs, bits of fallen leaves, things that look like wings from unknown insects, husks from seeds, and so on. It seems as if he has tried to search out all these little twigs one by one scattered throughout the scene he has chosen to capture, paying close attention to the fine and slender shadows and shadings that flit on top of the snow. Without realizing it, you feel like sticking your hand out to touch these slick, complex patterns, similar to the effect created by his "Froth" photograms.
For some time Nishimura produced unique, single works, but this exhibition features works in multiple editions, a format he has not created in a long time.
