Aya Yamamoto
The reflection of a garden in a pane of glass, which serves to frame a picture. Separate from the sight of trees swaying in the wind, this reflection in the glass has a different coloration and hue.
Aya Yamamoto's works are inspired by outdoor landscapes and objects, created by drawing directly onto panes of window glass. They seem to trace the outline of an entire world, hoping to capture and grasp the essence of all things. Her line drawings seem to layer a backdrop of naked trees in winter whose dead leaves have all fallen with the deep autumnal red of fall colors, or the deep green of evergreen trees - a vivid world rendered in riotous color.
The soft melting light that seems to be basking in a sound sleep and the flowers that relish it are drawn in supple pink lines, along with various young grasses and shrubs in the garden in a fresh coat of purple and blue. Stand a little distance away from the "window," however, and Yamamoto's line drawing takes on the appearance of a solitary, detached painting. These works have three guises: the original landscape, the landscape made up by layering paintings over one another, and the landscape that exists purely at the level of painting.
This exhibition features work in polyacrylic emulsion gel (that can be attached and removed) applied to a 2x4.8m glass surface beside the staircase connecting the first and second floors of the INAX Gallery. Yamamoto will be creating the work starting from before the exhibition period through to the start of the exhibition, so visitors to the gallery will also be able to witness directly the production of the painting.
