Shikanosuke Oka
Oka Shikanosuke (1898-1978) was a western-style painter who died 30 years ago. Oka’s paintings of pansies arranged in vases or baskets, old castles in deep forests, lighthouses set against a clear sky and electric power plants quietly muffled in snow have been loved by countless people. Oka painted these themes, over and over again, throughout his life. His painting style was formed in the 1920s, while he was based in Paris and Brittany. After his return to Japan in 1939, Oka’s style remained largely constant for the rest of his life. However, we must not overlook the occasionally adventurous aspects of his work and his passion for constantly furthering the maturity and completeness of his paintings. This exhibition, divided into nine sections featuring his carefully selected subjects with works from his earliest years to his final period arranged chronologically, will allow the audience a reconsideration of the abiding magnetism of Oka’s oeuvre.
