Hideaki Kawashima
Sitters in Kawashima's portraits look like abstracted souls of bodiless beings. Viewers get sucked into the penetrating stare of these sitters who seem to float in the air, as they experience the tension of being looked at within the innermost depths of their minds, while also feeling strangely serene, as if they are in the midst of offering a prayer.
Starting in 1995, Kawashima underwent ascetic training for 2 years at Enryakuji Temple in Mount Hiei, which led him to start drawing pictures as part of his daily activities. He puts androgynous motifs with a haunting quality on his canvases. These obsessively and repetitively depicted portraits might be a record of Kawashima himself, who sincerely continues to attempt to face up to his "self", a monster that he will never be able to obliterate.
In this exhibition, 8 to 10 new paintings will be on display. Kawashima describes his new sitters as "bearing various expressions, while keeping a certain distance from viewers". As the exhibition title suggests, viewers will experience a sense of psychological flux as they stare into his sitters' eyes.
