Bernard Cathelin
Ever since painter Bernard Cathelin passed away in April 2004, more and more people have started to become attracted to his work. When he was alive, Cathelin traveled throughout Japan, Mexico, Peru, America, Venice, and all around the world with his wife. He was stimulated by everything he saw, creating various landscape, figurative and still life paintings. Although he applied thick layers of paint onto his canvases, they do not project a sense of weight, but rather a sophisticated atmosphere carried through by his tough mentality and delicate sensibility. Also, the simplified forms, in which strength and softness co-reside, reveal how Cathelin was in control of his material and how he employed colors effectively.
Cathelin's works, achieved through simple composition and magnificent color choices, transcend time and suggest new sensations to the viewer. Following the retrospective exhibition held at Yoshii Gallery in 2005, this exhibition was made possible by the support of collectors and his surviving family members, comprising a total of 40 oil paintings and tapestries created over his entire career.
