"Cross Section of Japan's Cinematic Past Part 3: Monster and Science Fiction Film" Screening

National Film Archive of Japan
Finished
"Godzilla" was created in 1954, with Eiji Tsuburaya of Toho Studios as director of special effects, at a time when the Japanese film industry was entering its golden age. It was an astonishing point in the history of Japanese film when special effects, honed through years of experience creating war movies, were at the peak of their artistry.

Since then, the Japanese film industry has produced a number of unique monster movies one after another, cultivating unique genres of film such as futuristic war movies, sci-fi crime movies, superhero movies and many more. In 1967, when monster movies were at the peak of their popularity, Shochiku and Nikkatsu studios also jumped on the bandwagon in addition to Toho, Shintoho, Daiei and Toei, and began exporting Japanese monster and sci-fi movies overseas.

"Cross Section of Japan's Cinematic Past" is a series that aims to introduce audiences to the wealth of Japanese film heritage from a wide range of perspectives and the screening of films dealing with diverse genres and subject matter. This third installment in the series presents a total of 44 films (in 42 programs), focusing on Japanese monster and science fiction films. Masterpieces created during the "first boom" of monster movies will be screened.

Please check the Film Center's website for more details and screening schedules.
