This exhibition features 7 artists, some in their twenties, and some in their thirties or forties; a few of them fetch high prices at auctions, while another's experience extends only to a graduation exhibition. Also, the skills and styles seen in their work vary widely.
Kazuhiro Ito has been creating abstract, sometimes seemingly primitive bronze sculptures, using surplus stocks of foundry bronze, called "Yumichi". As the form and his process both suggest, he visualizes the inherent spirit which resides in sculpture.
Choosing Japanese lacquer as his material, Toshihiko Iwata adopts Japanese traditional motifs in his work, contextualizing them through a process of dynamic deformation. The simplified image achieved through this fusion of classic and contemporary methods gives a strong yet intimate impression.
Digital-generation artist Sachiko Ueno paints with a "layered" style, using traditional oil paint. The surface of her painting shows an unshaken confidence in her approach.
Paintings which have a minimal appearance require solid technical skills. Ryosuke Ogino's canvases are controlled through an elaborate scheme, as well as a heightened awareness of microscopic differences at the millimeter level.
Hiebie Souda faithfully deals with the theme of human life itself through revelations of death. This artist has recently fetched high prices at auctions, yet keeps making fresh, energetic work.
Teruaki Fuchizawa's work addresses something at a level lying beyond human wisdom. Viewers can hardly avert their gaze from his work, which reminds one of a form of intense ascetic practice.
Kotaro Yamaguchi's animation works manifest a humorous nihilism. Cruelty under the guise of sweetness has become a widely explored idiom. However, Yamaguchi's original approach - adding an element of nihilism to such an expression - opens up a new conversation.
What these artists have in common is a certain "youth" in relation to the art scene, a position that allows them to begin revealing and developing their potential. Roentgenwerke entrusts these artists with the mission of breaking down the barriers of the elitist art scene.
