Atsushi Suwa
Atsushi Suwa was born in Hokkaido, and graduated from Musashino Art University in 1992. He stayed in Madrid for two years through the artist program organized by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, and received international recognition as a painter.

After returning to Japan, Suwa focused on exploring realism as a way to revisit the origin of painting. In his exhibition in 2000, he showed a series of works based on his in-depth research on Butoh performers Kazuo Ohno and Yoshito Ohno. This working process largely inspired him to be engaged in analyzing the subjects closely, and to visualize their personal history and philosophy as well in his paintings.

Since then, Suwa has been exhibiting works highlighting the life of certain individuals. He is definitely a leading, figurative painter, who executes the process through which he achieves transcending realism.

This exhibition presents Suwa's innovative paintings including his most recent works, in order to examine the direction of contemporary painting.
