Marubeni 150th Anniversary Exhibition "From Clothing to Painting: A Recital of Beauty"

Sompo Museum of Art
Finished
The roots of general trading company Marubeni are in its drapery and kimono business, founded in the late Edo period, and a strong, unique art collection inspired by rich traditions has been built up over the years to accompany its long history. The garments collected for product development purposes form a valuable repository of resources that trace trends and techniques in dyeing and weaving from recent times. In addition, commissions of kimono designs from artists starting in the early Showa period gave rise to a network of connections and allowed the company to amass an excellent collection of works focusing on Western-style painting, including Gainsborough, Corot, Courbet, the Impressionists and artists from the Ecole de Paris. Targeting the mature Japanese market of the 1970s, Marubeni formed the first proper collection of works based on the import and sales of these artists. The collection even includes the only Botticelli in Japan, "La Bella Simonetta."

In this way, the Marubeni Collection has grown from strength to strength thanks to its business operations, becoming a sort of star-studded album of beautiful garments and famous paintings that have captured the hearts of generations of people in Japan. This exhibition features around 80 stringently selected works, including period costume, textile design plans, Japanese yoga paintings and Western paintings.

Lectures and other events are also scheduled. See website for more details (Japanese only).
