"Yanegawara" are traditional Japanese roof tiles that used to be a standard feature of landscapes in this country. One variety, the "kikumagawara" from Imabari in Aichi prefecture, boasts a 700 year history, and is distinctive for its unique "iburigin" silver color, symbolizing the beauty of Japanese culture. Using these tiles, born from rich, natural raw materials that are then carefully worked by hand, have come to be associated with a certain social status.
This exhibition proposes ways in which these Japanese tiles can enrich your lifestyle and home space, including being employed as a decorative element in bonsai arrangements. Kenji Kobayashi shows how new styles of space can be created using a cross between Japanese tiles and bonsai artistry.
