Seiji Kurata "Action 21c. Under Mex"

Epsite Gallery
Finished

Artists

Seiji Kurata
Kurata's "Flush Up" series of photographs from 1980 highlighted the intricate distortion of layers beneath Tokyo's surface, gouged out and dug up like layers of flesh. He portrayed the chaos of a city made up of a mesh-like network of streets, photographing scenes using lines of sight that percolated through viewers and landscapes alike. This exhibition turns its attention on the highways and flyovers that continue to change the face of this city, influencing the lives of Tokyo's residents with large scale construction and redevelopment projects. Kurata's latest series uses long exposures and a 4x5 camera to showcase Tokyo at dawn and in the dead of night, hiding behind and being obscured by the immensity of these construction sites.
