Hidetsune Kobayashi
Hidetsune Kobayashi (1908-1942) was a up-and-coming illustrator of the time who came into sudden prominence and took the book illustration genre by storm.

Kobayashi gained a lot of attention in 1934 with his illustration work for a serial novel in a newspaper "Teiso Mondo" by Kan Kikuchi. He soon became a popular illustrator with his blight and fresh style. Depiction of beautiful women with thick, long eyelashes and melancholy eyes were especially loved by readers of the novel and, a few years later, Kobayashi came to be known as one of "three masters of illustration" together with Sentaro Iwata and Tatsumi Shimura.

Unfortunately, this spirited young artist fell victim to the disease, brought an end to less than 10 years of his career as illustrator, and passed away at the age of 34. This exhibition is the first retrospective since the passing of the artist, showcasing original drawings, magazines, self-portraits, photographs and other documents. This is a great opportunity for the viewer to trace the short yet illustrious life of this passionate artist who never ceased to dream for his future.

Also on view are works by contemporary illustrators including Sentaro Iwata and Tatsumi Shimura, the artist's only descendant and renowned Sci-fi painter Shigeru Komatsuzaki, as well as the second son of the artist and successful illustrator Hirotaka Kobayashi.
