Taku Anekawa
Taku Anekawa is an artist who continually works with thread as a material and theme. He draws graphics onto canvases and then sews thread in an instinctive manner onto them, winning high accolades for his singular style of expression. In addition to exhibiting works all over Japan, Anekawa has also held solo exhibitions in New York. This autumn, Anekawa is holding a two-part exhibition at Gallery ef, an art space located in a converted earthen storehouse built at the end of the Edo period. For the first part, he made the surprising choice not to use canvases altogether, exhibiting only sculptural works made by wrapping and rolling threads into many layers. What emerged were characters that inhabited Anekawa's unique impressionistic world. Aware of the particular gravity and sense of darkness of this 140 year old storehouse, Anekawa has created an installation based on his impressions of this unique space. The second part of this exhibition starting October 31st incorporates elements of embroidery while summarizing the sculptural pieces from the first part in the form of canvas-based works. These characters born out of the darkness of the warehouse will return to life as canvases, spinning out the beginning of a new tale from Anekawa's embroidered threads.
