Toshiya Motai
Toshiya Motai has been creating unique "multiple panel cooperative paintings" inspired by Japanese byobu folding screens since his student days abroad in Germany in the 1980s, exhibiting them both in Japan and elsewhere. He has also participated in many solo and group exhibitions since then.

Motai's works in oblong format have changed greatly since he moved his atelier to Fujino, Sagamihara city in 1995. Fujino's layered landscapes made up of mountains and relief of different scales, with their dramatic up-down changes in perspective, have profoundly influenced his site-specific works. The result was the "Prospect Hut for Paintings" series, a device for simulating visual experience that captured scenery from the viewpoint of different formats.

This series was started in 2000, and a "prospect hut" was installed in the open air for the 2003 Echigo Tsumari Art Triennale, literally turning the prospect of natural scenery into a painting, allowing visitors to peek at the landscape beyond by looking through the several gaps and crevices in the hut. Visitors entered this small, dark shack with room enough only for one, built on the slope of a mountain that commanded a 360 degree view of forests extending far into the distance, blue skies, and piles of rain clouds, and reveled in the scenery framed and captured by a window measuring 30x10cm. Motai's hut evoked the breathtaking charm and raciness of the act of peeking, through round windows in buildings that framed gardens and landscape differently each time, allowing audiences an intense albeit vicarious experience seen through the stringently selected viewpoint of the artist.
