Stella Worley conducted an international exchange program called "Locus" between Asagaya Art School and the Norwich School of Art and Design in England in 2004, and came to Japan as the first artist to be dispatched as part of the program. The drawings and installations in this show are based primarily on the on-site research and performances carried out during her stay there. Her art book called "Tokyo Tales" and "Tokorode" installation draw from anime and manga. These techniques that have now become less specific to Japan and more a shared means of expression worldwide, depicting a chaotic world populated with Japanese icons that she is particularly drawn to, such as yakuza gangsters in Kabukicho, host clubs, "kogaru," geisha and samurai. In this way, she takes as the starting point for her own work certain fixed notions and preconceptions that many foreigners have about Japan, creating her own unique Japan tales that blend fact and fiction.
