"Silence" Exhibition

Art Lab Tokyo
Finished

Artists

Jomi Kim, Anette Overgaard, Kagan Onal, Bilge Barhana
Although one might argue that silence is merely another state of sound, one defines it through comparison to the condition of non-silence. The artists in this exhibition all graduated from the Master's program at London's Central St Martins, but their upbringing, childhood environment and current living conditions are different. Each of them however responds actively to the theme of silence from their respective viewpoints, producing and presenting their work with a palpable enthusiasm. Visitors are invited to come to see the conflicts and noise generated by the works of these four artists, how they resonate with each other, and how they sink back into the depths of silence.

Jomi Kim believes that silence is a gentle pause of sounds and a state of mind, which are already within the event.

Anette Overgaard looks into the silent history of prejudices.

Kagan Onal thinks no matter how much we shall romanticize it, silence is not physically possible and he is grateful for that.

Bilge Barhana believes that silence is the absence or oppression of speech and two species are especially prone to it: women and animals.
