Since ancient times, beginning with unglazed earthen objects, clay figures and magic figurines, Buddhist sculptures and dolls, humans have made objects in their own image.
In the modern age, such figurative forms became illuminated by notions of Western art and its value systems and came to be called "carvings", "ornaments", "dolls" or "craft". However, a portion of those artists who have taken humans and plants as their motifs have carried on working in their own idiom.
This exhibition is based on a historical approach to figurative sculpture different from the classification systems that have been handed down over the ages, attempting to transcend commonly-accepted categories of ornament, doll or carving. Borrowing the image of personified, anthropomorphic figures, these 6 artists have attempted to create and experiment with modern figures in these 50 works.
