This "Quest for Vision" is a new exhibition series starting this year that deals with a total of five themes, one per installment, using material from the video collection. New perspectives focusing on pieces from the permanent collection will be explored, tackling a wide variety of material from the first tentative experiments in pre-film history, right up to contemporary video expression that channels the latest technologies. This year's first installment is titled "Imagination - Vision, Perception and Beyond," an exhibition comprising 3 parts that address techniques of expression that give form to the human imagination.

Part 1, "Visual Media Adventures," traces a lineage of visual tricks and illusions, from shadow plays and magic lanterns to anamorphosis. Part 2, "Supplementary Perceptual Devices," showcases forms of perception that emerged through the channeling of particular media capabilities, such as serial photography, camera obscura and camera lucida. Finally, Part 3, "Beyond Vision and Perception," looks at the possibilities for film and video that transcend the realm of the visible, or even the comprehensible. In addition to famous works that trace the prehistory of film and video, new installations by Shiho Kano and Takashi Makino, as well as pieces by contemporary artists Naohiro Ukawa, Kyoko Kuno, Mizuki Watanabe and others are on display.
