Miki Kubota "Removing Shadows - Cornering Light"

Artists

Miki Kubota
Kubota creates her work from ready-made furniture attached to the wall with nails, or placed carelessly on the floor. With a certain evocative quality, her sculptures also give viewers a sense of relief and tranquility, as if time has stopped ticking. By carving the surface of the furniture, filling gaps with plyboard and paste and then carefully polishing it, she produces smooth cut planes that are reminiscent of abstract painting. The "interior" of the piece, usually inaccessible to viewers, is unsparingly exposed: captivating audiences with its mysterious state that goes back and forth between fiction and reality.
Shadows exist wherever there is light and an object. What can be anticipated from the title of this exhibition is not merely the act of taking away something from what exists, but rather Kubota's desire to fill and saturate the world around her with something that arises out of her creative process.
