"Japan Avant Garde" Exhibition

Parco Factory
Finished

Artists

Tadanori Yokoo, Akira Uno
From the 1960s through the mid 1980s, underground theater groups such as Jokyo Gekijo, Tenjo Sajiki, Black Tent and Jiyu Gekiba aligned with the activities of mainstream commercial theater groups, giving rise to a singular, unique theater scene. The posters for performances by these groups overflowed with passionate messages, and were created by artists like Tadanori Yokoo and Akira Uno.

This exhibition offers visitors a rare opportunity to view these graphic masterpieces of underground theater poster design. At the time of these performances, only limited quantities of each were produced, and few copies survive today as a result.
