Kanzo Shibata
The relief features and contours of huge, white snow-covered mountains appear on upright walls that seem to divide the room into parts. Fallen snow piled up on the ground glints in the light. Up close, the fine lines used to render contours become strikingly visible, and thereby acquire a sculptural quality. From the front, one gets the impression of a precipitous chain of mountain ridges, while a view from the other side reveals deep dents and depressions.
Kanzo Shibata's work use 11cm thick insulation construction materials, and hot needles no wider than 1mm across to carve and make incisions on polystyrene foam boards and turn them into sculptures. They are typically around 180cm high and 3 to 9 meters across, giving the impression of contours seen from a bird's eye view. Snowflake patterns, chains of trees in forested areas blanketed by heavy snow, submarine life diagrams, labyrinthine city layouts - these are some of the associated motifs conjured up by Shibata's work.
Shibata is a young artist who graduated in 2007 from the graduate school of the Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music. He has previously worked with materials such as tree sap and aluminum, but since 2006 he has turned his attention to works similar to those in the current exhibition.
