Gakuji Nakagawa "Looking At Appearances"
This event has ended.
At Gallery Mitate
Media: Product, Crafts
Nakagawa has been making wooden toys with toy manufacturer Take-G Toys since 2001. Using the colors and grains particular to each type of tree, he combines woods in various combinations to create patterns via a technique called "yosegi" (wood inlay). Nakagawa's minutely detailed works are created using four types of wood - zelkova, walnut, white ash and teak. They are crimped according to their color and hue and shaved and planed to form faces and bodies and then finished with an oil coat. The animals and other characters thus formed are filled with a loving humor that fascinates both kids and adults alike.
Because of the painstaking and meticulous handiwork involved, sales of these toys are limited to the duration of the exhibition only. Nakagawa's first exhibition at Mitate will feature around 90 pieces.
Artist will be at the gallery on the 7th, 8th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 18th and 19th.
