Gallery Deux Poissons is pleased to host Claude Schmitz's first solo exhibition in Japan.
Born in Luxembourg in 1972, Schmitz studied art in Germany, Belgium and England. Since 2001, he has been working as a jewelry artist, exhibiting his work not only in his home country of Luxembourg, but also in countless exhibitions in Spain, Portugal, Holland, England, and the US. These works are now housed in the British Museum, the Luxembourg National Museum of History and Art, and so on. Although Schmitz first studied painting and interior design, it was a natural transition for him to turn to jewelry making, having long been fascinated by goldsmithing. Schmitz widened his expressive possibilities by creating jewelry, a medium more closely related to the human body than any other form of art.
Schmitz describes his recent work as "minimalist baroque". Being "minimal" and "overtly decorative (baroque)" at the same time embodies a contradictory position that is humorous. However, it very accurately portrays the essence of his world. By using both abstract and organic motifs, and by transforming narrative elements into constructive forms, he leaves plenty of room for viewers (wearers) to interpret his work rather than telling them a complete story. Freely going back and forth between the concrete and abstract, all of his materials are transformed into sophisticated yet substantial metalwork thanks to his precise craftsmanship. Schmitz' jewelry continues to fascinate wearers with its modern-classical look, as well as its rich tactile appeal.
