Tomoko Sumiyoshi
Tomoko Sumiyoshi was born in 1981. She started working as an artist in 2005, and after receiving the 1st Article Grand Prize (from the art magazine Article) in 2008, has continued to extend the scope of her practice.

Sumiyoshi's motifs includes animals and plants, but the installations that employ them, plus elements of painting and sculpture, turn out differently every time. In recent years she has turned more decisively towards sculptural works with a hybrid form - white animal shapes with plant-like parts such as flower petals and leaves. Although they seem perfectly lovely forms at first, there is also something strangely repulsive about them; hints of a sudden, abrupt metamorphosis that calls to mind genetic engineering and ecological balances upset by a human hand.

This solo exhibition focuses on Sumiyoshi's sculptures, newer works as well as the pieces that won the Grand Prize at the 1st Article Awards, all of which are laid out in an installation-style setting.
