Tokyo Kamen is a project that attempts to express the chaotic energy of the city of Tokyo through dolls that wear masks. Without being restricted to any one of art, fashion or design, gallery or shop, it collaborates regularly with design offices and works together with other units on product development and web design. Tokyo Kamen is thus a truly open-ended creative unit that always has some possible unexpected project or development hidden up its sleeve.
This second exhibition by Tokyo Kamen at Art-U Room is titled "Tokyo Jungle". Turning its back on last year's pop-themed, optimistic "Tokyo Kamen Travel Diary" exhibition, "Tokyo Jungle" homes in on the frictions and conflicts that arise from gaps and discrepancies in diverse lifestyles and values, as well as the ever-thrumming noise in the city, creating a space that channels the vibrations of Tokyo into the likenesses and dolls that make up Tokyo Kamen. These dolls, expressing different trends and styles at one stroke, reflect the current climate of the city as a kind of contemporary "ukiyozoshi", popular parables of the urban condition.
The dolls that make up the center of Tokyo Kamen are all handmade, with different themes and materials used for each series, lovingly finished with meticulous and detailed embroidery. This startling array of dolls, brimming with vitality, were made using blue tarpaulin, Tokyo Kamen's first time using this material.
