Winter Exhibition - Japanese Modern Painting 1910-1930s from the Museum Collection

Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura
Finished

Artists

Tomoyoshi Murayama, Ryuzaburo Umehara, Yasuo Kuniyoshi et al.
This exhibition showcases modern Japanese painting in the yoga (Western) style, works which comprise the core of this museum's collection, dating from the Taisho through to the early Showa period and spanning a wide variety of movements and schools. The yoga painting style took root in the dwindling days of the Tokugawa shogunate and in the early Meiji era, when many Japanese painters devoted themselves to studying new Western and European painting while searching for their own artistic idiom from within Japan's vernacular traditions. These artists opened various avenues for new artistic expression while cultivating strongly original painting styles of their own.

Some of the more notable artists includes the Fusain-kai, a group opposed to the academicism of government-sponsored exhibitions; Tomoyoshi Murayama, Ryuzaburo Umehara and Yasuo Kuniyoshi, who had absorbed the movements of their time in Germany, France and America; early Showa figures like Hiroe Koga, Hiroshi Maeda and Kotaro Migishi; as well as painters and sculptors who served as a continuous link between the war and the postwar periods, like Shunsuke Matsumoto and Saburo Aso. Over 70 works by 50 artists.
